Country House was declared the winner of the 145th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday when Maximum Security became the first horse in the history of the race to be disqualified after crossing the line first.
So, what exactly happened?
In this podcast: Dr. Carrie Hammer, the North Dakota State University Director of Equine Science, explains.
As the horses came around the final turn, Maximum Security drifted into another lane… and, as he did that, he not only impeded the progress of another horse, but he put the safety of the horses and jockeys in danger.
While Hammer believes the jockey when he says the horse moved to avoid a puddle, unfortunately, it doesn’t change the fact the horse drifted and the rules are the rules.
Also, is the health of these horses a concern to her?
