Evan Bischoff, West Nile Virus Coordinator/Communicable Disease Epidemiologist at the North Dakota Department of Health, joins Amy Iler and JJ Gordon for a discussion on the current state of West Nile cases in the region – plus, he provides a “What You Need to Know” layout of West Nile symptoms, treatment and prevention.
Symptoms of West Nile
Fever
Headache
Sore Joints
Body Aches
Swollen Lymphnodes
The average case will see these symptoms for several days and then be alright afterwards. In some more advanced cases – or with the young/elderly – the symptoms may present as severe or last weeks. There is potential for neurological damage in some extreme cases.
Treatment of West Nile
There is no vaccine or antiviral is available for the treatment of West Nile. Most people will just need to allow the virus to run its course. If the individual is an infant or elderly – seek medical attention to treat the symptoms.
Prevention of West Nile
These seem basic, but they go a LONG way in preventing possible infection.
Use an EPA approved bug spray. Coat exposed area of your skin and follow directions on when to re-apply.
Wear long sleeves and full pants. Give the mosquitos less landing area of exposed skin.
