Have you seen a video shared through social media and thought…something doesn’t seem right? After some quick googling, you realize that this video is fake. They manipulated a voice or imagery and took audio out of context. Odds are someone made that video and were hoping you would just believe what you are seeing and hearing – and then share it into the world.
Deepfake is a term that is used to describe a fancy style of creating lifelike videos that are half real / half fake.
For example, deepfake content could include a piece of adult material made to look like a celebrity engaging in an lewd act. It can also be used to make a politician say or do something that makes an opponent look better. (Remember the Nancy Pelosi video controversy?)
Unfortunately, these videos are getting more and more convincing. The technology is out pacing the publics’ ability to tell what is real and what is fake.
We are living in an era of research, research, research. If you see something that even feels slightlyoff – do some additional research before sending it off to your Twitter or Facebook. It’s embarrassing to have to take down a post, but you are also now part of the problem. The scammers can make all the videos they want, but if no one is watching…they don’t have any power.
Amy, JJ and Marlo also have a fun time talking about myth busting website Snopes.com. From the early years of Snopes figuring out if Walt Disney’s head really was frozen to being a master watchdog online spotting and debunking deepfake videos in 2019.
