We’ve all read the headlines about China not taking our recycling. So, what does that mean? And, should we stop recycling?
In this podcast: Mark Aldrich, from MinnKota Recycling in Fargo, joins IT2 to discuss.
You might be surprised to know the market seems to be the least of her worries…
Market Options
“We’re not as affected by this [China concerns] because we are in the Midwest and we have market options,” Aldrich says.
Most of the recycling from Fargo goes to the Midwest market and there are over 1250 processors in the region.
30%
Only 30% of our recycling is exported to China, Korea and India. And, as Aldrich points out, China has banned materials coming in from the US for the last 4 years. And, while it has impacted the market value, she doesn’t see this as a long-term issue.
HOW to Recycle
So, while she isn’t worrying much about the market, she is hoping this is a wake-up call for consumers to get educated on HOW to recycle. She says, “We can’t just recycle everything.”
Get educated on what plastics are accepted (#1, 2 and 5) and make sure to wash out the containers before throwing them in the bin. This can help streamline the process to make it more cost effective.
