Retired Horticulturalist Dave Decock is the prince of pruning, the lord of the lilacs and the peonies police. He answers calls and texts from listeners who need answers about Maple trees, vegetable gardens, dry lawns and more.
Dave starts off the show with a conversation about cucumbers. A listener is having trouble getting two varieties up and running. The suggestion is to dig up the plant if it doesn’t produce or dies off. Look at the roots and assess whether the root structure was too wet. If it looks mushy or similar to a cooked carrot, it probably got too much moisture.
Have you ever dealt with a peony that buds, but doesn’t open or only partially opens. Plant Talk helps a listener by telling them about Peony Blight. Too much rain or humidity causes the issue. The blight over winters on the stalk, so Dave suggests that the listener cut it back to just below the soil line in the Spring. This should help get things back in shape.
Do you have little red, slightly raised dots on your Maple leaves? That indicates you had some bugs and when the insects eat the leaf, the tree produces the little red bumps. Using an insecticide next year if the bugs show up again would work just fine.
