Phil Swan, Fraud Expert for Gate City Bank, does double duty and sticks around for two segments on this edition of Fraud Squad.
1st Up – Currency that isn’t cash
A lot of times, fraudsters will use means other than direct cash to scam you out of small and large amounts of money. For example, if they were to get direct cash from you, they would have to directly take that money from you or have a very small trail from your pocket to theirs. By adding in “middle men” like gift cards, your purchase leads to a hard to trace form of currency and finally they turn that gift card into $$$. It keeps a human element out of the scam. They are taking “things” from you instead of money. JJ notes that retailers are now warning customers who purchase gift cards that if they are doing so to pay off the IRS or some sort of bail – they are likely being scammed.
2nd Up – Scams during disasters
With the recent events in the Bahamas and along the eastern seaboard in the US, scammers are already setting up fake “text in” numbers and phony relief websites. Even if you are 99% sure that a charity is legitimate and really helping those who have lost everything – it doesn’t hurt to do some googling or ask a friend. These individuals who are cheating people out of their money don’t care that you had the best intentions, they just want the cash. Be smart and do a little follow up before you hit the donate button!
