Dr. Derine Winning tackles questions from pet lovers who are concerned about topics such as over-the-counter medication, tear stains, overly aggressive behavior, dog food variations and concerns about cuts.
A particularly interesting call from a listener with an older dog who seems to be suffering from some sort of nasal issue. Her dog won’t stop having discharge and, recently, she noticed blood. Dr. Winning urged that the dog should be brought into the vet to be seen (she has found all sorts of foreign objects inside the nose) but the caller is concerned about the advanced age of the dog and the risk of sedating. Dr. Winning said that the quality of life should be considered and the benefits for the animal’s health/happiness outweigh the risks – even the most unfortunate of all.
Dr. Winning also gives some advice about an overly aggressive dog. This particular pooch wants to fight with other dogs. In this case, the best bet is to use positive reinforcement. Small steps, patience and lots of treats. The details in the podcast are incredibly simple, but take time.
