Dr. Russel Colson, a Professor of Anthropology & Earth Science at MSUM, joins It Takes 2, to talk volcanoes.
Are there signs?
“We aren’t very good at predicting eruptions, obviously but here are signs… each volcano and eruption is different,” says Dr. Colson. New Zealand’s White Island volcano is a very gas rich volcano, which is what makes it so terribly explosive. You could think of it like a can of Coke, and you shake it up… it will erupt.
Often times, the volcanoes will build up gas under ground and those will start leaking to the surface. With this volcano, they had noticed some gases leaking to the surface, they just didn’t know that meant a major eruption was imminent.
Once a volcano erupts, it can be a couple of days to weeks until it is finished.
(Oh, and we talked very briefly about the concern with the Yellowstone volcano!)
