As you decide who gets your vote what are you looking for? Are you looking at issues, or are you looking for personality? Are you looking for experience or are you looking for something new? Or…..are you looking strictly at a political party?
It seems to just be the latter.
I don’t know whose fault that is. It certainly isn’t the fault of any political party. They’ve been trying to get you to do that for years. No, somewhere along the line you decided to do that yourself. Take my home state for example. People used to always question how such a red state could elect a completely Democratic congressional delegation. I used to explain that it was about doing the job. That Congress needed people who could get things done. Quentin Burdick was an example of just that. He broke through the political barrier years before Kent Conrad, Byron Dorgan and Earl Pomeroy. And no one could say he didn’t bring home the bacon.
Then along came the farm crisis. The Reagan years were anything but kind to farmers. Along came Kent, Byron and Earl, and they got things done. They straightened out the mess and good times followed.
Times were good enough that the need to focus on the economy passed. Then, the way to win was to demonize. It was time for social issues to be front and center. Abortion, gays, and guns for example. The Democratic Party didn’t align with the majority in the middle of this country on those issues. Or at least, that’s what was sold.
So here we are in financial trouble again. No thanks to Republican tariffs costs are through the roof. Living is through the roof. And the word affordability is now part of your vocabulary.
Which brings me back to my original question: Are you willing to give them a chance?
We’ll soon see.
Good riding with you,
Joel
