Shirley A. Volesky, 89, Moorhead, MN, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND.
Shirley Ann Hettwer was born November 18, 1936, in Calio, ND, to Nick and Clara (Wengeler) Hettwer. She attended school and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Devils Lake, ND. She continued her education and attended Interstate Business College in Fargo, earning a degree in secretarial and office management.
On June 6, 1959, Shirley was united in marriage to the love of her life, Edward J. Volesky. Together they raised four children, Janelle, Mike, Mark and Matt. While Edward farmed with his father, Shirley worked for the Fargo School district and retired after 17 years.
Shirley graciously volunteered her time at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, assisting with funeral lunches and ensured the church remained a welcoming sanctuary for all. She also volunteered at the St. Francis Thrift Store and Outreach Program in Fargo and was an active member of Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters for many years. Shirley was a wonderful cook and enjoyed going through her cookbooks looking for the next recipe to try.
Shirley will be remembered and missed by her daughter, Janelle Volesky of Fargo, ND; three sons, Mike (Tonia) Volesky of Three Forks, MT, Mark Volesky of Moorhead, MN, and Matt (Karla) Volesky of Horace, ND; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Jenai), Danielle, Iain, Reed, Tessa, Seth and Sydney; two great-grandchildren, Maksym and Mirela; one sister, Grace Steffen of Devils Lake, ND; two brothers, Nick (Mary Ann) Hettwer of Calio, ND, Harvey (Anna) Hettwer of Arizona; and one sister-in-law, Elaine Hettwer of Fargo, ND.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Clayton Hettwer; father and mother-in-law, Vincent (Emily) Volesky; brothers-in-law, Francis (Mary Jane) Volesky, and Bert Steffen; along with one great grandchild, Mikolai.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, November 6, 2026, at 11AM in St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Moorhead, MN. A recitation of the Rosary will begin at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Moorhead, MN.
