WEST FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – These small American flags may just look like lawn decoration, but for one West Fargo man they mean a whole lot more.
“It’s one thing we can agree on. It’s good to be patriotic and honor our veterans and workers,” Mike Kiernan said.
Kiernan has been decorating his neighborhood on patriotic holidays for over 20 years.
“My daughter in Shakopee had a neighbor that did it, and I saw that and thought ‘Man, this would be a good thing to do.’ So I started to do it in West Fargo 20 years ago,” he said.
It’s also his way of paying tribute to his family’s history of service. Both of his parents served in World War II.
And it’s no small task.
“I think it’s about 200. I’ve got two five gallon buckets, and take one at a time, and I put those out until I run out, and then I go back and get some more,” Kiernan said.
Over the years he and his grandchildren have gone up and down the streets, placing flags on every corner.
“I’ve got nine grandkids from three families, and I’ve had all of them here on different occasions,” he said.
Building memories he hopes will last a lifetime.
“I want my grandchildren to know what veterans gave up for our country,” Kiernan said.
