(KNFL/KFGO) – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks would start their final series of a six-game road trip against the Kansas City Monarchs Friday night. Offense would reign supreme in this series opener, especially for Fargo-Moorhead. The RedHawks would send Patrick Wicklander to the mound, as he would be opposed by Nate Webb of Kansas City.
Matt Kroon would start the scoring on a solo home run in the top of the 1st. Dillon Thomas would give the Hawks breathing room with a three-run home run to make it 4-0 Fargo-Moorhead. Saul Garza of Kansas City would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 1st with a two-run home run.
Leading 4-2 entering the top of the 3rd, the RedHawks looked to separate even more. After a bases-loaded walk to Brian Fuentes, and a sacrifice fly by Aiden Bryne, Fargo-Moorhead would get three straight RBI singles. Jesus Lujano, Matt Kroon, and Tucupita Marcano would be the ones to hit RBI singles. With that five-run 3rd inning, Fargo-Moorhead would lead 9-2. Edwin Diaz would hit another two-run homer for the Monarchs in the bottom of the 3rd, making it a 9-4 game.
In the top of the 4th, Aiden Byrne would be hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which made it 10-4 RedHawks.
Jose Sermo would tack on another run with an RBI single in the top of the 5th. Brian Fuentes would add on two more with a two-run single to make it 13-4 RedHawks.
Edwin Diaz and Hudson Head would hit back-to-back home runs for Kansas City to make it 13-6 in the bottom of the 5th.
Grant Richardson would hit the Monarchs’ fifth home run of the game in the bottom of the 6th inning. It would be a solo shot to pull Kansas City a run closer at 13-7.
But Fargo-Moorhead would pull away even further, as in the top of the 7th, Jesus Lujano drove in a run on an RBI single, and Matt Kroon would hit a two-run single to extend the lead to 16-7. The RedHawks would add one more in the top of the 8th on a Dillon Thomas sacrifice fly, as Fargo-Moorhead would cruise to a 17-7 victory.
The RedHawks would have 20 hits in the game, as every batter in Fargo-Moorhead’s lineup got at least one hit. Matt Kroon and Dillon Thomas each had four RBI nights.
Patrick Wicklander would be given a no-decision, after throwing four innings, while giving up six earned runs, and striking out six. Bryce Brassfield would get the win in relief for Fargo-Moorhead after relieving Wicklander in the 5th inning. Brassfield also went four innings, and struck out six batters. Nate Webb was given the loss, as he went 2 2/3 innings, while giving up nine earned runs.
Fargo-Moorhead is 2 1/2 games back of Kansas City, who still sits in 1st place. However, they only have a half game lead over Winnipeg, who won their 13th game in a row Friday. The RedHawks will look to win the series Saturday evening, and get closer to 1st place in the West Division. 6:15 is the pregame show Saturday evening on 740 The FAN KNFL AM Fargo/107.3 FM, 740thefan.com, and the FAN mobile app.
