The Chicago White Sox boosted their defense on Monday with the acquisition of Colorado Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle.
The American League Central Division leaders sent Triple-A right-hander Mason Adams and teenage shortstop Carlos Vielma to the Rockies.
Doyle, 28, missed two months this season with a left oblique contusion, then a left groin strain suffered during a rehab assignment. He returned to the major league roster on July 31.
He has managed a .214 batting average with one homer and five RBIs in 45 games this season, but the White Sox are betting on a return to his 2024 form. That’s when he won his second consecutive Gold Glove while setting career highs for average (.260), home runs (23), stolen bases (30) and OPS (.764).
Over four major league seasons with Colorado, Doyle hit .233 with 49 homers, 182 RBIs and 79 stolen bases to go with 484 strikeouts and 110 walks in 458 games. He’s one of many Rockies who showed significant home/road splits. In 229 games away from Coors Field, Doyle posted a .202/.256/.317 slash line versus his .260/.314/.456 production in 229 home games.
To accommodate Doyle on their 40-man roster, the White Sox designated right-handed reliever Duncan Davitt for assignment.
Adams, 26, ranked as the White Sox’s No. 8 prospect per MLB Pipeline. He returned from Tommy John surgery early this season and is 3-4 with a 3.86 ERA in 14 games (12 starts) across three minor league levels. That includes 3-3 with a 4.25 ERA in nine games (seven starts) spanning 36 innings at Triple-A Charlotte.
Vielma, a 16-year-old from Venezuela, signed an international contract with Chicago in January. He hit .337 with one homer, six doubles and 21 RBIs in 34 games with the White Sox’s Dominican Summer League rookie-class affiliate.
