JAMESTOWN, ND (KOVC) – Jamestown Mayor-Elect Katie Hemmer said she will meet with Governor Kelly Armstrong before her official swearing-in on July 6 to discuss how Jamestown can collaborate with the state on the issue of housing and other subjects related to economic growth.
“There is no need to wait until July 6 to get started,” Hemmer said. “We have many issues, like housing, where our state and local governments must work together to solve problems. I know Governor Armstrong agrees. That’s why I want to hit the ground running even before officially taking office.”
During her campaign for Mayor, Hemmer highlighted the issues of “new housing and new jobs” and explained how the issues are tied together. “I’ve always believed that homes are where jobs go to sleep every night,” Hemmer said. “A growing and affordable housing market is required to sustain and grow our labor force. You can’t have one without the other.”
Regarding her upcoming meeting with Governor Armstrong, Hemmer said the next legislative session will be upon us soon and that our mayor needs to be collaborating with the Governor, other elected city leaders, and state legislators long before then. Hemmer added that the legislature will definitely be dealing with the housing issue and other issues of importance to Jamestown.
“We need to be engaged in conversation with all the key players before the session ever starts,” Hemmer said. “Following my meeting with the Governor, I will begin bringing residents, businesses, community organizations, and local leaders together as one team focused on building Jamestown’s future. As I said throughout the campaign, my campaign for Mayor is a campaign for Jamestown. Elections are behind us; now is the time to unite around our shared goals and move forward together.”
