Jan. 6 US Capitol insurrection
First you incite them. Then you sit back and watch them. Then you praise them. Then you pardon them. And now you want to pay them?!
That’s what Donald Trump did and wants to do with the January 6th insurrectionists. He wants to pay them for beating cops with an American Flag and wiping feces on the rotunda of the Capitol. All while attacking Senators and Congressman. And don’t tell me that they didn’t attack them. The Capitol Police prevented them from getting to them; otherwise, some of them would be dead.
So now we sit praising how democracy worked and he didn’t get the money to pay them. For now! Legislation was not passed to stop him. And if we know anything about Trump, it’s that he always gets his way.
So if you have a fellow MAGA supporter who was there on January 6th, don’t be afraid to lend them a buck or two. They’re going to come into some money.

Gary Nelson died. Gary was the Republican leader of the North Dakota Senate for most of my tenure. Gary ruled with an iron fist. He was deeply committed to the traditions and rules of the Senate, and deeply committed to the State of North Dakota.
We hadn’t stayed in touch as much over the years as I would have liked to. His life took him away from politics. He earned that.
In the end, I’m proud to have known him and worked with him. And most importantly, to call him my friend.
