Marlene Ann Kuss, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and dedicated community member, was born on May 27, 1961, in Linton, North Dakota, to Michael and Zita (Wald) Kuss. Her early years were spent on the family farm near Napoleon, ND, where her deep connection to the land and family roots were nurtured. Later, the family moved to Bismarck, ND, where Marlene completed her education, graduating from Bismarck High School in 1979.
Shortly after, Marlene began a remarkable 43-year career with Fargo Public Schools, serving as a secretary at various schools. Her commitment and warmth left a lasting impression on colleagues and students alike.
In 1988, Marlene married Randy Schmidt, and together they made their home on the Schmidt family farm near Sabin, MN. Life on the farm was a true partnership as Marlene worked alongside Randy in every aspect of farm life from tending to the yard work, gardening, and maintaining the flower gardens. She was the perfect farm wife and cherished the sun and warmth, which seemed to echo her bright spirit. Marlene enjoyed visiting with her mother-in-law each week to discuss which direction to mow their lawns, to match, as well as what kind of flowers to plant.
Family was the most important to her and she was always supportive in everything they did. Marlene and Randy were blessed with a son, Scott, whose baseball games were joyous occasions. She spent countless hours pitching in the yard and later embraced the precious role of grandmother, dedicating her time to caring for her grandchildren, Peyton and Logan, who she would do anything for. She always had a smile and a quiet way and her and daughter-in-law, Paige, could sit and visit for hours.
Marlene also enjoyed many visits to the Minnesota State Fair, creating memories filled with love and laughter. One of her latest ventures was helping Scott and Randy get ready for their big firework show.
Marlene is lovingly remembered by her husband, Randy Schmidt of Sabin, MN; her son, Scott (Paige) Schmidt of Sabin; her cherished grandchildren, Peyton and Logan Schmidt; mother-in-law, Clarice Schmidt of Sabin; six siblings, Father Al Kuss of Edina, MN, Dennis (Diane) Kuss of Plymouth, MN, Leroy (Carol) Kuss of Fargo, ND, Clarence (MaryLou) Kuss of Jamestown, ND, Cindy (Keith) Lindsey of Bismarck, ND, and Pat Scherr of Otsego, MN; as well as sister-in-law, Char Kuss of Sierra Vista, AZ. Her life was further enriched by many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who felt her warmth and kindness.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Michael and Zita Kuss; father-in-law, Rodney Schmidt; brother, Mike Kuss; and brother-in-law, Lee Scherr.
Marlene’s life was one of steadfast love, dedication, and generosity—a true blessing to all who knew her. Her memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those she touched.
In her final act of kindness, Marlene donated her corneas, a generous gift that reflects the compassion that defined her life.
