ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – Minnesota House Republicans are calling for the removal of a Democratic lawmaker as tax chair after she apparently told another lawmaker to go kill himself.
It came after Democrats were unable to bring a gun violence package to the floor for a vote late Thursday night.
Rep. Aisha Gomez of Minneapolis can be seen on video yelling at Republican Rep. Elliott Engen of Lino Lakes. Republican Drew Roach of Farmington posted the video, saying Democrats have gone completely unhinged.
Engen reposted the video and said he can confirm that multiple Democrat colleagues told him to go shoot himself.
Republican leaders are also calling on Gov. Walz to condemn the actions.
Speaker Lisa Demuth and Leader Harry Niska released the following statement about the incident:
“This kind of behavior is unacceptable and it makes every person in this place less safe,” said Demuth. “Someone willing to spew hate and accost colleagues is unfit to serve as a leader in Minnesota.”
“After the horrible tragedies we’ve had in Minnesota over the last year, it is sickening that an elected official would think it’s acceptable to say the things we heard tonight,” said Niska. “We had just heard hours of debate and heartbreaking stories of loss and violence. To respond to that with threats and hate is unconscionable and unacceptable.”
