(KNFL/KFGO) – The Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks would start exhibition play this afternoon against the Winnipeg Goldeyes in front of a solid crowd at Newman Outdoor Field. With these two teams being known rivals, it was going to be a good game from start to finish.
Winnipeg would strike first, as Ramón Bramasco would hit an RBI single in the top of the 1st. Later in the same inning, Max Murphy would drive in a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 Goldeyes. No one would score until the bottom of the 3rd, as Juan Fernandez would get Fargo-Moorhead in front for the first time in the game, on a 3-run home run to right-center field. It would stay tied at 3 up to the top of the 7th, where Ray-Patrick Didder hit an RBI single, giving Winnipeg the lead back at 4-3. However, Fargo-Moorhead would respond in the bottom half of the 7th. The Redhawks would have Jake Hjelle at 3rd, and Andy Nelson at 2nd. Jesus Lujano, would was traded to Fargo-Moorhead from Cleburne in the offseason, hit a groundball to Winnipeg reliever, Weston Lombard. Lompard then made a throwing error scoring both Hjelle, and Nelson, as Fargo-Moorhead would retake the lead. Juan Fernandez would add another run on with an RBI single to make it a 6-4 Redhawks lead. In the top of the 8th, Adam Hall would get Winnipeg back within 1 on an RBI single to make it a 6-5 contest. Then, in the top of the 9th, Redhawks reliever, Liu Fuenmayor, gave up 2 bases-loaded walks. That gave Winnipeg a 7-6 lead going into the bottom of the 9th. With 2 outs, Peter Brookshaw would be up to bat with the tying run at 2nd base, and the winning run at first. Goldeyes reliever, Kevin Vaupel, would strike out Brookshaw to end the game, as Winnipeg would hang on to win it 7-6.
Despite the loss, Fargo-Moorhead’s Juan Fernandez would have an excellent day at the plate, driving in 4 RBIs. That would include the 3-run home run in the bottom of the 3rd.
