MOORHEAD (KFGO) — A judge has approved the formation of a new rural water district in Minnesota.
West Central Regional Water District will service Norman, Polk, and Clay Counties. It is the first new water district to form in Minnesota in over 40 years. The project was proposed after a survey found residents had several problems with private well water. Residents reported arsenic contamination, a salty aftertaste, and stained clothing.
“We’ve had one citizen report that for every gallon of water that they pull, there comes a cup of dirt in that,” Clay County Administrator Stephen Larson said. “So it’s challenging to utilize from safety, cooking, bathing, those types of things.”
The cities of Felton, Nielsville, Halstad, and Georgetown have already received state and federal funding to connect to the water supply. Construction of infrastructure for the project is expected to start in 2027.
