By design, electronic posting continues to evolve. This program was the first ever in the nation and the Game and Fish Department continues to work with all stakeholders to adjust, improve, adapt and methodically roll out changes.
New this year, landowners have the option to electronically post their land from Aug. 1-July 31 (entire season); Aug. 1-Nov. 22 (through deer gun season); or only during deer gun season (Nov. 6-22).
Landowners who have a profile on the Game and Fish Department’s mobile application have the option to communicate with hunters using their cellphone app. A link will be available for hunters to send a request to the individual posting the land.
Here’s a list of frequently asked questions, with more available on the Game and Fish Department’s website at gf.nd.gov.
Are landowners required to use electronic posting? No. Landowners may continue using physical signs and are not required to post electronically.
Can landowners use both physical signs and electronic posting? Yes. Landowners may use electronic posting on some parcels and physical posting on others.
Do electronically posted lands need to be reposted every year? No. Once land is posted electronically, it remains posted unless the landowner makes changes.
When is the signup period for electronic posting? The signup period begins Feb. 1 and ends July 1 each year.
Can land be posted electronically after the July 1 deadline? No. Lands posted after the deadline must use physical posting methods until the next signup period.
Can nonresidents post land electronically? Yes. Nonresidents must upload a copy of their driver’s license for verification.
Can renters or managers post land electronically? Yes. Individuals authorized by the landowner may post land electronically.
Is there a penalty for posting land electronically without permission? Yes. Unauthorized posting may result in criminal charges, including identity theft, deceptive writings, or posting without permission.
What are the penalties for hunting on posted or electronically posted land? A first offense is a Class B misdemeanor. A second offense within two years is a Class A misdemeanor.
Can posting designations be changed after submission? Yes. Posting designations may be changed until July 1.
Can land be unposted after the deadline? Yes. Existing electronically posted lands may be turned off or marked “not posted” after July 1, though printed maps will not reflect these changes and digital updates may be delayed.
What information is visible when land is posted electronically? The name of the person who posted the land is required. Optional contact information may include an email address, phone number, alternate contact, or in-app messaging through the North Dakota Game and Fish Department mobile app.
Do printed maps show landowner contact information? No. Contact information is only available through online mapping tools.
Why can’t some land records be found? The system relies on county tax parcel data, which may not reflect recent ownership changes or may not be available.
Who is eligible to post land electronically? Only the landowner or an individual authorized by the landowner may post land. Posting property without permission is a Class B misdemeanor.
