WARROAD, Minn. (KFGO) – About a half-dozen homes were evacuated after a train derailment north of Warroad on Saturday morning.
Warroad Fire Chief Damien McMillin says they were notified about the derailment just before 5 a.m. on March 28.
Law enforcement went door-to-door to evacuate people in 6-7 homes as a precaution.
The evacuation zone was from 400th Street to County Road 137 along Highway 313.
The Patch Motel was made available as an emergency shelter.
McMillin says 42 cars from a Canadian National Railway train derailed and two were considered “dangerous goods cars.” He adds there are no environmental concerns at this time.
State hazardous materials teams from International Falls and Grand Rapids responded to the scene for air monitoring and to check for leakage on derailed railcars. The National Weather Service is also assisting with air monitoring activities.
First responders, Canadian National Railway officials and mutual aid partners are working on clean-up. McMillin says it could take 2-3 days to clean up the scene.
No evacuations were ordered in the city of Warroad.
