Vern Thompson (D-Fargo)
FARGO (KFGO) – After failing to receive Democratic party support to run for North Dakota’s Congressional seat, Fargo independent trucker Vern Thompson has announced that he will run for state Agriculture Commissioner in November.
Thompson, making the announcement on KFGO News & Views, said he doesn’t believe long-time Republican Commissioner Doug Goehring is doing enough to support the state’s farmers.
Thompson, who represented the Minnewaukan area in northeastern North Dakota in both the state House and Senate from 1989 to 2000, works in the oil patch hauling petroleum products. He’s 69.
Goehring was first appointed by then-Governor Hoeven in 2009. In 2022, he defeated the Democratic candidate with 76% of the statewide vote.
