ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – A bill moving through the Minnesota House would allow for a “happy hour” for those living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities by allowing those properties to serve alcohol to residents.
“My friends and I love happy hour, just like many of you do, I am sure. Over a shared drink, we get to reminisce about parts of our life, military service, raising a family, the loss of a friend, and celebrating the golden phase of our lives too,” said Anita Lebrun, who lives in an assisted living facility. “Just because we are older and live in assisted living doesn’t mean that we should have fewer freedoms than anyone else.”
Abby Dahl, the Executive Director of Amira Choice Assisted Living in Champlin, supports the measure.
“This is their home. They are legal adults. We were shocked to learn that we would need a permit, one that would add costs and license and permit fees, liquor insurance and extra red tape for my city and for many other cities in Minnesota. Not every city has a local permit that fits our situation.”
The bill was approved and added to the Omnibus Liquor Policy Bill, and will now head to the House floor for vote.
