MOORHEAD (KFGO) – An employee at an assisted living facility in Moorhead has been fired after she admitted to stealing money from a resident.
The Minnesota Department of Health conducted an investigation at Arbor Park Living Center at 2921 6th Avenue North after reports of financial exploitation.
The report says an employee admitted to making $1,286 of unauthorized purchases using the resident’s credit card.
The man was living at the assisted living facility following a stroke and also has cognition and short-term memory issues.
The investigation found 45 charges were made on the resident’s credit card over a two month period.
One bank statement showed more than 20 charges were from vendors including Temu, Uber Eats, Amazon, Jimmy Johns, Noodles and Company, TikTok Shop and Door Dash.
During an interview, the resident’s community support worker said they try to check his bank account weekly due to previously compromised banking information.
“She brought the resident to the bank to close the card. The community support worker stated she thought that was the end of it but when they went to the bank a few weeks later, his account only had $2 in it and her heart sank,” the Department of Health report says.
During an interview, the former employee admitted to using the man’s card and was ‘very remorseful’ over the incident.
She said she obtained the credit card information after the resident asked her to help him order food.
The woman said after the first card was cancelled, she obtained the resident’s card information a second time and resumed using it.
The employee was fired and the facility says it reviewed policies and procedures and retrained all staff.
