PIERRE, S.D. (KFGO) – The South Dakota Department of Public Safety says highway fatalities reached a five-year low in 2025.
The Department says despite 123 deaths in 110 crashes, the numbers are a significant improvement in roadway safety.
Highway fatalities were down 16.9% in 2025 compared to 2024, and fatal crashes were down 18.5%. The Department of Public Safety says of the fatalities where seat belt use was applicable, 59% of the deaths were people who were not wearing a seat belt. There were 21 fatalities attributed to speeding. People on motorcycles were 23 of the fatalities.
Alcohol-related deaths increased slightly last year with 35 attributed to impaired driving. That’s up from 33 in 2024.
