Have you heard of the “Sunday scaries”?
It’s a relatively new term that describes the stress many people experience on Sunday afternoons when they start thinking about everything they need to handle or accomplish once the work (or school) week begins.
According to a recent poll, 49% of adults are burdened with feelings of anxiety or dread on Sunday because of what they know will be waiting for them come Monday morning. These feelings of trepidation typically start to set in somewhere around 4:00 p.m., and they often ruin the rest of Sunday afternoon and evening. What’s more, a typical adult in America today can expect to deal with the Sunday scaries thirty-six times every year. That’s nine months’ worth of Sundays bogged down by anxiety and stress!1
As followers of Jesus, we are called to something far greater than the Sunday scaries. We are called to fill ourselves with God’s peace. That is a call and a promise emphasized over and over within the pages of God’s Word.
Perhaps the most beautiful iteration of God’s promise to fill us with peace is found in Paul’s letter to the church at Philippi. He wrote:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6–7)
Now that’s a promise!
This is a post from Pastor Dr. David Jeremiah. I’ve been reading his daily devotionals for years and recently started watching his video’s.
