Gary (North Dakota Highway Patrol)
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KFGO) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol’s bloodhound, K9 Gary, and his partner Trooper Nevon Heisler helped in the search for a missing 10-year-old in South Dakota.
The boy was reported as a runaway around 1:30 in the morning late last week in sub-zero temperatures.
Sioux Falls Police Lt. Nick Butler says it was a big scene involving dozens of organizations and law enforcement agencies.
“We were assisted by the North Dakota Highway Patrol and the Omaha Police Department with the use of their bloodhounds to do some tracking of the child. This child was considered endangered because of the age, 10-years-old, and because of the extreme weather temperatures that were happening in the overnight hours.”
The boy was found safe nearly 20 hours later and evaluated for possible cold exposure.
Bloodhound Gary joined the North Dakota Highway Patrol in March 2025 and recently turned one year old.
