2026 special session of the North Dakota Legislature (North Dakota Monitor)
BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) – The North Dakota Senate has voted to defeat legislation that would have provided universal school meals. The vote on Friday morning was 24 to 22.
The group, “Together for School Meals,” says it will continue to collect petition signatures to place the question of providing no-cost breakfast and lunch on the statewide ballot in November. If it passes, the state constitution would be changed to guarantee every student access to one breakfast and one lunch every school day. The group is working to gather just over 31,000 petition signatures.
The legislation would have placed free meals into state law, allowing lawmakers to drop the program should it become too costly.
