Lawmakers have introduced bipartisan legislation to delay recent changes to federal hemp laws that could harm the nation’s hemp industry.
House Ag Committee Ranking Member Angie Craig of Minnesota and Republican Congressman Jim Baird of Indiana have introduced the “Hemp Planting Predictability Act.”
The bill would amend the restrictive hemp provisions included in the Continuing Resolution and Appropriations bills passed in November of last year. The new policy outlaws any hemp product with greater than 0.4 milligrams of THC, and becomes effective on Dec 31, 2026.
The new law has generated significant pushback from the hemp industry, and Rep. Craig says the changes, “pull the rug out from under hemp producers, craft brewers and retailers at a time when too many business owners are dealing with high prices and uncertainty.”
Baird says, “Congress should have given farmers more time” and “not have passed such a sweeping policy change that upends a growing industry.”
The legislation would delay the recent changes from going into effect until 2028.
