Northland Arboretum forest ice skating trail
BRAINERD, Minn. (KFGO/Learfield) – The Northland Arboretum has unveiled a new ice skating trail in the Brainerd-Baxter area.
The Zamboni-maintained forest path is the first manufactured forest ice skating trail in central Minnesota.
The outdoor attraction drew hundreds of visitors in its first days of operation ahead of the holidays. The trail officially opened on December 21, welcoming nearly 100 skaters on opening day.
“And there’s another reason this project matters deeply. Our local figure skating team (especially the beginners) often struggle to find ice time,” the Northland Arboretum said while fundraising for the trail on Give to the Max Day. “Hockey programs dominate most schedules, leaving these dedicated skaters with limited practice space and hours. A forest skating trail could give them an alternative place to train, in a setting unlike anywhere else.”
While fundraising for the trail, Northland Arboretum said donations could help enhance trail lighting. The organization also hopes to purchase skates to start a small rental program.
Weather permitting, the skating path will remain open through March.
