High wind snaps the gate as the NDDOT closes I-29 from Grand Forks to Canada
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KFGO) – Roads around the region were impacted as strong winds and snow moved through Thursday.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation closed parts of Interstate-29 for portions of the day. The DOT says the wind is so strong that it snapped the gate they use to close the interstate.
A no travel advisory was in place for much of the region due to blowing snow creating poor visibility and dangerous road conditions. The North Dakota Highway Patrol says becoming stranded in this weather can be life-threatening.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation also advised no travel on highways in northwestern Minnesota due to high winds causing blowing snow and zero visibility. A sheriff’s deputy in that area was rear-ended on State Highway 1 near Thief River Falls.
Oversized loads were restricted in the northwest and northeast regions of North Dakota. The Highway Patrol says empty, lightly loaded, and high-profile vehicles should use extreme caution due to high winds and icy road conditions.
