ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – Get ready for higher property taxes next year. Property owners across Minnesota could be asked to come up with nearly $1 billion more for certain government operations, according to data released Thursday by the Department of Revenue.
Preliminary numbers show a statewide increase of up to 6.9% for 2026.
Here’s the breakdown: Cities could see around an 8.7% increase, counties 8.1%, townships 5.6%, schools 5.8%, and special districts 4.6%. The data shows the total tax asks amount to $948 million above what property owners paid this year.
Last year, the final increase came in lower than early estimates, about 5.6%. The preliminary figures are what counties use to calculate the Truth-in-Taxation notices residents will get this month.
The rates shown in the new data aren’t final. They can still be shaved down but cannot rise from that level.
