TWO HARBORS, Minn. – There was a record turnout Monday for the annual Beacon Memorial Lighting ceremony at Splitrock Lighthouse on the North Shore to remember the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The names of the 29 fallen crew members on the Edmund Fitzgerald were read on the 50th anniversary of the ship’s sinking in Lake Superior. The Splitrock Beacon was lit for a couple of hours following the ceremony.
Former site manager Lee Radzak spoke about coming up with the idea for a memorial in 1985 while listening to Gordon Lightfoot’s ‘The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.’
