(Big Stone County Sheriff - Counterfeit bills)
ORTONVILLE, Minn.. (KFGO) – Authorities in western Minnesota are warning businesses of counterfeit $50 bills being used to make purchases in the area.
The Big Stone County Sheriff’s Office has advised business owners to be vigilant when accepting currency and to invest in a counterfeit detector pen, which is typically under $10 and can detect fake bills.
The bills share the same serial numbers, have lighter blue coloring to the left of President Grant, and are textured differently from other U.S. currency. On the back of the counterfeit bills, there is a red mark on the Capitol, possibly from a mark by a counterfeit pen on the original bill that was copied.
The sheriff’s office has not reported the number of counterfeit bills that have been found.
