SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Gov. Kristin Noem has blocked industrial hemp from being grown in South Dakota, but that’s not stopping Native American tribes.
The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe and Oglala Sioux Tribe have filed applications with the Department of Agriculture to grow hemp. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe plans to hold a vote on hemp before applying.
Several people aren’t waiting for permission – they already harvested hemp on tribal land this year. Many Native Americans are drawn to hemp’s promise of being both good for the environment and bringing cash to their communities.
Hemp supporters say Noem’s opposition gives them a head start, but also may complicate their ability to transport and sell it. But they also face bureaucratic hurdles, competition from other farmers and an unpredictable hemp market.
