While I write this, the United States government is shut down. Lines have been drawn in the sand and neither party seems willing to cross them. Senate Majority Leader John Thune is in front of every camera blaming the Democrats, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is getting in front of every camera blaming the Republicans.
The one thing I’m certain of is that our elected officials don’t work to the level they should. The positioning of blame is all about getting reelected. All with the excuse of needing to be in the majority to do anything anyway. And the sad part is they’ve made it true, as it shouldn’t take a majority, but in today’s world it does.
The worst part is that even with that power, they still don’t do anything. Taking 90-day summer vacations while saying you’re meeting with constituents isn’t using that power either. Especially when you’re not willing to talk to them face-to-face.
So the big question now is, when have you seen them use that power to do something for the working class in this country? They can brag about a small tax break and say how much is going to come from what they gave to the richest of the rich. The old trickle-down theory! Because everyone knows they don’t have enough at the top.
So when do those in power actually challenge each other? I’m not talking about the opposition party, but rather their own party. When do Senators Hoeven and Cramer look at Senator John Thune and say that unless the “Big, Beautiful Bill” is fixed, rural hospitals and nursing homes will close. It may take some months or even a year or more, but they will eventually close without the help they receive from the federal government.
I guess my point is: don’t hold your breath. And if you’re a farmer, know that any deal with China isn’t a priority. Right now, the last thing on the minds of those in power are tariffs. Maybe they never were.
That would take too much work.
Good riding with you,
Joel
