Former State Sen. Nicole Mitchell sentenced
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (KFGO) – A judge in Detroit Lakes has sentenced former Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell to six months in jail.
Becker County District Court Judge Michael Fritz sentenced the Democrat Tuesday morning. She will be allowed to serve the time in the Ramsey County Jail in St. Paul. She was ordered to begin serving her sentence Oct. 1.
Mitchell was convicted of burglary and having burglary tools after a four-day trial in Detroit Lakes in July. She broke into the home of her stepmother in April of last year. She initially told police that she wanted to get some of the belongings of her late father.
Before the sentence was imposed, Mitchell apologized saying “ I don’t think there is anything I can say or do that will ever be big enough to repair the harm that I’ve done.”
Becker County Attorney Brian McDonald asked that Mitchell spend at least six months in jail or a workhouse.
Mitchell, from Woodbury, resigned her senate seat a week after she was convicted.
