MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Two men are dead after they were shot during a domestic assault call in Moorhead.
Moorhead Police Chief Chris Helmick says officers responded to an apartment building in the 2400 block of 3rd Avenue North, north of Highway 10 and east of Highway 75.
The officers were met by a woman who said she had been assaulted by two men that she knew. Two children were still in the apartment. Shots were exchanged when officers tried to contact the two men.
Surrounding apartments were evacuated and Red River Valley “SWAT” was activated. More shots were fired when “SWAT” took over the scene and the two men were shot.
“SWAT team medics and Sanford Ambulance crews immediately rendered aid to the injured subjects, while safely removing the the uninjured children from the apartment.” Helmick said. “Lifesaving measures were unsuccessful and one individual was pronounced dead at the scene. The other individual was transferred by ambulance to a local hospital where they later died from their injuries.”
Three Fargo police officers who responded to the call and are “SWAT” team members fired their guns and have been placed on administrative leave.
Moorhead Police, Fargo Police, Dilworth Police, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, Sanford Ambulance and Red River Valley SWAT all responded to the incident.
The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is handling the investigation.
