Senators from three U.S. dairy states are calling on the Trump administration to help level the playing field for dairy farmers as trade talks continue between Canada and the U.S.
For years, the lawmakers say Canada has skirted international trade agreements, including the U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement, by blocking American producers from Canadian markets and exporting Canadian dairy products at artificially low prices, undercutting American dairy products and hurting U.S. farmers.
Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Joni Ernst (R-IA) sent a letter to the White House pointing out that Canada has failed to live up to its commitments to provide access to its market, and this remains the case even with new provisions in the USMCA.
“In addition, Canada appears to be evading USMCA disciplines designed to deal with excessive exporting at artificially low prices,” the senators said in the letter. “Canada hasn’t lived up to its agreements for years.”
