ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senate Republicans are out with a series of bills they call “Minnesotans Safety First” legislation.
Sen. Warren Limmer of Maple Grove is calling for increased transparency and accountability in the state’s sentencing guidelines.
“We have far too many instances where those who have been convicted of a crime are receiving a light sentence, then turned loose and continue to victimize innocent people,” Limmer says.
The plan requires the Sentencing Guidelines Commission to record and publicly share its meetings and create a public database of sentencing decisions statewide.
Democratic Sen. Ron Latz of St. Louis Park says Minnesota has already seen a reduction in the crime rate for the second year in a row.
