STEARNS COUNTY, MINN. – A Stearns County man faces several charges after firing gunshots at officers during a standoff.
The sheriff’s office says the incident started Saturday morning when deputies were called to a home just east of Paynesville after the victim reported a domestic incident.
Nicholas Kaufenberg, 58, refused to come out and claimed he had guns and was willing “to use them.” By afternoon, the Stearns-Benton SWAT team was called in with negotiators trying to convince the suspect to surrender.
After hours of unsuccessful talks, SWAT officers breached a bedroom. Kaufenberg fired multiple shotgun rounds at the officers who used armored vehicles and were able to take the man into custody and taken to the Stearns County jail.
A search of the house turned up “multiple firearms” and spent shell casings.
