It seems like every year around this time I groan and write about how the weekend berween the AFC and NFC Championship games and the Super Bowl is the toughest time for sports on television. High school events are fun to follow this time of year; but on Sundays meaningful sporting events where I am going to be glued to the television on a cold and frigid day donโt exist. Its good that the Wild and Timberwolves are both relevant now but they dont play every Sunday to full the void. There could be some things out there that could change that..
Instead of the NHL doing the โWinter Classicโ on New Yearโs Day, when most sports fans are watching college bowl games, they should have the outdoor games this past weekend NASCARโs ratings have really dropped over the last 20 years and should strongly consider moving the Daytona 500 to โPro Bowlโ week to pickup sports fans who are looking for something to watch.
Some people tell me to watch PGA golf, but it is hard for me to get into it until the Masters, and it is depressing seeing all of that green grass with this miserable weather. Maybe if Fargo native Tom Hoge can be relevant in events leading up to Augusta I will watch more.
When I see the United Football League conmercials promoting the leagueโs start at the end of March and I scream at the television, โWHY NOT NOW?โ The league should have started the Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday of the NFL conference championship games and flood games all weekend of this past โPro Bowlโ weekend to plant the seed for football fans starving for more. There is a huge void in television sports until the NCAA basketball tournament starts; hopefully something will fill the gap soon.
