MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Moorhead Area Public Schools says it took immediate action in response to a notification from the Moorhead Police Department that a student likely brought a stolen handgun to the Moorhead High School Career Academy Monday morning.
A statement from the district says that while the student was not initially present on campus, school staff remained vigilant and on alert. Upon the student’s arrival, the student was immediately apprehended at approximately 10:25 a.m. It was confirmed that the individual was in possession of a firearm.
Moorhead Police say the 17-year-old male student stole an unsecured handgun from a 25-year-old Moorhead resident. The man told police the 17-year-old had been at his apartment, and left with the handgun. The student then went to the Career Academy, where they were arrested without incident.
Police say the student did not display the handgun, and no known threats of violence were made.
“We are grateful for the rapid response and collaboration between our staff and law enforcement,” said Superintendent Dr. Brandon Lunak. “The safety, security and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priorities, and we are proud of the systems and protocols in place to address situations like this effectively.”
Moorhead Area Public Schools emphasizes its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all students and staff. The district’s threat assessment processes have been instrumental in identifying and addressing risks proactively.
Threats of any kind are taken seriously and are not tolerated within Moorhead Area Public Schools. The district will continue to work closely with law enforcement and its community partners to ensure the safety of all.
Police are filing a long-form complaint against the student for felony charges of gun theft, possession of a stolen gun, and having a gun on school property. The 25-year-old Moorhead resident may face charges for the unsecured firearm.
