DWIGHT, N.D. (KFGO) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a Richland County Sheriff’s deputy was distracted and not wearing a seatbelt when he suffered serious injuries in a crash last Thursday.
Steve Nelk, 30 of Abercrombie, was on his way to law enforcement training in Wahpeton in his personal pickup when he dropped his phone on the floorboard. As Nelk reached down to pick it up, the pickup went into the ditch and hit a driveway. The pickup vaulted over the driveway and rolled twice before coming to a stop upright.
Nelk was taken to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo with broken ribs, a fractured back, and other injuries.
The crash happened around 6:10 p.m. Thursday on County Road 81 about five miles north of Dwight.
Nelk was cited for failure to maintain control – distracted driving. He has been with the Sheriff’s Office for about 12 years.
