WHITE EARTH, N.D. (KFGO) – A northwestern North Dakota man is charged with multiple felonies after assaulting a sheriff’s deputy and trying to take his gun in Mountrail County.
According to court records, the deputy was trying to take 33-year-old Andrew Wiedmer into custody for a warrant when Wiedmer ran. The deputy ordered Wiedmer to stop, but he continued to run and the deputy tased him twice. Wiedmer eventually dropped to his knees.
When the deputy tried to handcuff Wiedmer, the two began to struggle and Wiedmer elbowed the deputy in the face, splitting his forehead open. Wiedmer then started choking the deputy and tried to take his handgun.
The deputy was able to call for help. When other officers arrived, they were able to take Wiedmer into custody.
The deputy was treated for the cut on his head. Wiedmer was booked into jail.
The warrant was for a police chase in September when officers clocked Wiedmer driving over 110 mph, including 100 mph in a 45 mph zone. During the chase, Wiedmer nearly hit three cars head on and almost caused multiple crashes.
Wiedmer has a history with law enforcement dating back to 2009.
Not counting other active felony warrants, Wiedman is charged with 11 counts of reckless endangerment, fleeing, aggravated assault, preventing arrest, and attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer.
