FARGO – Fargo Police Sgt. Zachary Robinson was recognized with the prestigious IACP/Axon Police Officer of the Year Award at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) during the annual conference in Boston, Massachusetts today.
Robinson was recognized for his heroic actions during a tragic incident on July 14, 2023, when a heavily armed gunman fatally shot Fargo Police Officer Jake Wallin and injured Officers Tyler Hawes and Andrew Dotas, as well as an innocent bystander, at the scene of a vehicle crash. In response, Sgt. Robinson confronted and exchanged gunfire with the gunman, ultimately neutralizing the threat and preventing further harm to the Fargo community.
“I am extremely honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Robinson, who was promoted to sergeant in August 2024. “My actions on July 14 are a credit to The Fargo Police Department, which provides top-notch training and the tools necessary for officers to respond to critical incidents.”
Sgt. Robinson was one of four finalists for the Officer of the Year Award. Due to the high quality of submissions, all four finalists were honored with the award. The other recipients include Officer Dominque Akins of the Allen (Texas) Police Department, and Officer Rex Engelbert and Detective Michael Collazo of the Metropolitan Nashville (Tennessee) Police Department.
“Zach’s bravery on July 14 is one of the most remarkable acts of heroism in Fargo’s history,” said Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski. “This recognition from the IACP and Axon is a proud moment for our entire department.”
The IACP/Axon Police Officer of the Year Award recognizes and honors officers who exhibit exceptional valor and dedication in the line of duty, often in life-threatening situations. The IACP, a global professional association with over 34,000 members in more than 170 countries, is dedicated to advancing safer communities through progressive police leadership.
