WEST FARGO (KFGO KVRR) –Hurricane Helene hit hard for communities across six states. The recent death toll has reached close to 230, with 88 confirmed in North Carolina. Tom Turchin, a Boiler Tech with Johnstone Supply in West Fargo, said he wanted to do something to help.
He says, “I mean charity always starts at home with your family and your community and out there, but if you can give down there. I just happen to know a lot of people on the eastern seaboard from the time I spent in the navy down there. We still kind of keep a close tide because of social media and it’s actually a good thing. It’s not a good thing that they lost their house, but they still have their life.”
Turchin started asking for donations last Tuesday. With roughly 500 pounds of water and food, including peanut butter and pasta, Turchin will be driving down Friday morning to Johnstone’s location in Asheville, North Carolina.
Tom Turchin- Boiler Tech at Johnstone Supply, says “And I said let me talk to management down in Sioux Falls and then came back an hour later and sat down and did a conference call with him. He said yeah we’ll give you the time off to go down there. We’ll donate the three pallets of water and then your time to go down there.”
While Turchin had to turn down some donations due to the limited space, he said whatever is left over will be donated to the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center.
The Johnstone Supply branches in Iowa, South Dakota, and Wisconsin will also be dropping off donations to branches in Asheville.
