FARGO (KFGO)—Fargo City Commissioners unanimously passed an ordinance prohibiting camping on public property, but there were some differences over a resolution that was added to the ordinance to provide some leeway.
It has several new priority enforcement areas and the intention to implement housing first, a short-term solution that will precede the comprehensive long-term housing first strategy.
The vote was three to two in favor of the resolution.
Commissioners Dave Piepkorn and Michelle Turnberg voted against the resolution but supported the overall ordinance.
Mayor Tim Mahoney called the homeless encampments a serious problem, and the city has been working to solve the problems along the Red River. He says adding the resolution is more “dynamic” and can change as needed, allowing some camping with additional rules.
