MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota livestock groups are working with the DNR to address deer depredation.
State Cattlemen’s Association president Jake Thompson from Barnesville says deer are eating crops to the point where there are fields that are starting to drop because they haven’t been able to get a yield because of the deer.
He says in northern Minnesota the feed problems are occurring more often in the winter and spring.
DNR commissioner Sarah Strommen says there’s no silver bullet solution to the problem. She says they need multiple tools in that toolbox to help, whether it is fencing to keep deer out of food storage areas,. And then obviously trying to reduce deer densities in areas.
Strommen says the state’s depredation program has waned over the years, and it’s clear they need to rebuild it.
