EDGELEY, N.D. (KFGO) – Emerald Ash Borer has been confirmed in LaMoure County, the first time the destructive beetles have been found in North Dakota.
The North Dakota Department of Agriculture found adult ash borers in a trap 9 miles north of Edgeley earlier this week. Larvae were also found in the area.
Emerald Ash Borers are native to Asia, and have been confirmed in 37 states since 2002. The beetles are an invasive species, and are responsible for killing hundreds of millions of ash trees in the US.
State Forester Tom Claeys says more than 90 million trees in North Dakota are ash trees that are at risk of being infected by ash borers. Infected trees can die within a few years.
Firewood from LaMoure County is now quarantined, and can’t be transported out of the county without being inspected. Moving wood outside the quarantine can result in a $5,000 fine.
